Same-Sex Couples and Unmarried Partners Qualify for the Greek Golden Visa
The Greek Golden Visa Program extends its benefits to unmarried partners and same-sex couples.
On May 22, 2018, an amendment to Law No. 4540/2018 was passed, allowing couples with a cohabitation agreement in Greece to qualify for the program.
The revised provisions have been in force since August 22, 2018, contributing to a broader climate of acceptance and inclusivity. This development has laid a positive foundation for further progress, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage in Greece.
Effective February 2024, Greece formally recognizes same-sex marriage, bringing its legal framework in line with broader European standards on equality and civil rights. This change has a direct impact on the Greek Golden Visa Program, enabling same-sex married couples and partners to access its benefits on equal terms.
As a result of the newly introduced legal changes:
• Same-sex spouses are now eligible to apply for the Greek Golden Visa under the same investment, using their international marriage certificate
• Same-sex couples may also formalize their relationship through a cohabitation agreement, which is legally recognized for immigration purposes in Greece
• Both marriage certificates and cohabitation agreements are accepted as valid documentation for family reunification under the Greek Golden Visa program
